Tissue Massage of the frontal muscle and epicranial aponeurosis area on the elasticity of the Superficial Back Line
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2018, Vol 34, Issue 1
Abstract
Background. Deep Tissue Massage (DTM) is a manual therapy approach used for the elimination of abnormal tension and restrictions within the myofascial system. The aim of this study is to show the possibilities for therapeutic work in the frontal muscle and epicranial aponeurosis area, as well as to present the results of the study on the effect of relaxation of the Superficial Back Line of healthy people at working age, following the massage of the area mentioned above. Materials and method. The study involved 194 women with the average age of 29,45±7,12 years. The participants were randomly assigned into one of three groups. In the first group the treatment included the epicranial aponeurosis, whereas in the second group, the treatment included the frontal muscle. In the third group both structures were treated. Before and after the treatment, range of motion of all participants during a forward bend in a sitting position was measured. Results. In each group, a comparable increase in the elasticity of the tissues during a forward bend was observed already after the first therapeutic intervention. On average, the range of motion increased over 4 cm (p<0,05), whereas in case of 8 participants, the result was 10 cm and more. Conclusions. 1. The treatment of the epicranial aponeurosis, the frontal muscle or both of these structures at the same time has a comparable relaxing effect on the Superficial Back Line of healthy people at working age. 2. Deep Tissue Massage of the epicranial aponeurosis area appears to be an effective, simple and time-saving therapy in the case of the abnormal soft tissue tension. Further, similar research including both sexes, different sport disciplines, as well as different disease entities is needed in order to examine the effectiveness of the method.
