TO THE STRUCTURE AND HISTORY OF KAMCHATKA CANYON (EASTERN KAMCHATKA)
Journal Title: Geologia i poleznye iskopaemye mirovogo okeana - Year 2018, Vol 14, Issue 3
Abstract
The paper deals with study of the structure and history of the Kamchatka canyon (Eastern Kamchatka) according to the data of sounding and seismic continuous profiling. Methodology include interpretation of data of sounding (block diagram, block of echograms, longitudinal profile of the canyon, bathymetric map) and seismic continuous profiling (fragments of seismic profiles). The regional gas saturation of the Cenozoic cover is found on the shelf and adjacent continental slope; slides on the left (length ~ 55 km, western slope of the peninsula of the Kamchatka cape) and right (length of more than 25 km, slope of the avandelta of the Kamchatka River) sides of the canyon and their sizes are specified; hanging slides on the left side are connected with the redeepening of the canyon by 100—150 m; on the middle slope, a large (28 km) block slide that descended the Kamchatka canyon, its almost compensated paleochannel and a sublatitudinal turn, associated with the displacement of the canyon mouth to the north by 70 km, when the ridge-barrier rises in the Middle Pleistocene-Holocene. The materials of the sounding and seismic continuous profiling, presented in the paper, allow us to contour slide massifs on the sides of the Kamchatka canyon, to select the most dangerous places for numerical modeling of slide tsunami (hanging slides in the upper slope area) and to prepare related recommendations for the builders of the new international sea port of Ust'-Kamchatsk. Keywords: active margin, canyon, sedimentary cover, slide, paleochannel, gas.
