Total serum Bilirubin level in men with Coronary Artery Disease

Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Low total bilirubin (TB) has been shown to be inversely related to Coronary artery disease (CAD). Aims: To study the association of TB with CAD [acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and chronic stable angina (CSA)] and to assess the correlation of serum TB with established risk markers. Materials and method: The study included 106 male CAD patients (AMI=66 and CSA=40) attending RIMS hospital, Imphal. 60 age and sex matched apparently healthy subjects were taken as control. Results: Serum TB, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) were measured in serum of both cases and control. RESULTS: Serum TB was significantly lower in AMI and CSA than control group (0.61±0.29; 0.51±0.26; 0.81± 0.30) mg/dl respectively; p<0.001. Serum TB was also significantly correlated with low density lipoprotein (LDL); r = - 261 (P<0.01), and high density lipoprotein (HDL); r = 322 (p<0.01). Conclusion: CSA and AMI patients had lower TB when compared to control group. However AMI patients had a higher TB level than CSA patients. Smokers had significantly lower TB than Ex- smokers and non-smokers (P<0.028).
