TOWARDS THE TRASLATION OF PLAY ON WORDS AS THE MEANS OF HUMOROUS EFFECT CREATION

Abstract
The given article deals with such language phenomenon which creates humorous effect as play on words. It reveals its structure, classifications, focuses on the ways of its rendering into a target language. Play on words is based on various semantic shifts which creates ambiguousness and as a rule causes different comic effects. Play on words can be of variant types depending on the language material it is based on: phonetic, lexical or phraseological. The peculiarities of its translation are connected with this fact. In general, polysemic play on words is easier to reconstruct in the target language than homonymic one. Play on words can be rendered using loan translation, compensating play on words (replacement) or other stylistic devices. Translating play on words preserving both its structure and idea is rarely possible because of the differences between the source and the target languages.
