Transgenic plants in the social context
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2004, Vol 4, Issue 2
Abstract
The new biotechnologies take part of the daily life. Within their branches is the vegetal transgenesis which has revolutionized agriculture, considering itself the superior level of the Green Revolution. The transfer of genes from a specie to another one, from a kingdom to the other has made possible the acquisition, by the plants, of unusual characters having allowed them to survive in inhospitable surroundings, to renew the resources of the substrate, to resist to diseases and plagues, herbicides, hydric stress, to provide better nutrients and phytomedicines where the “green vaccines” stand out. The speed with which these technologies have been developed has allowed taking the transgenic cultures to million hectares in many countries of the world, and the number grows every year. In spite of an absent of reports of environmental damages, nor of human health or animal, for more than 45 years of these practices with recombinant DNA, a strict control is followed case by case in the liberation of these genetically modified organisms (GMO) by the biosecurity, which plays a fundamental role in the prevision of risks towards environment and the society. The public opinion is divided about this subject so controverted. That is why it is necessary that the scientists explain clearly about the reach of the vegetal biotechnologies and get involve in the interchange of impressions.

Influence of maltose and sucrose on somatic embryos maturation of Glycine max cv. ‘Incasoy-27’
The somatic embryogenesis in soybean crop (Glycine max) has as limitation the low percentage of conversion to plant that is obtained, attributed to the presence of somatic embryos with abnormal morphologies during the...
The potential of Trichoderma in the sustainable development of agriculture
The sustainable production of food without affecting the environment is nowadays a society challenge that requires transforming the conventional systems of agricultural exploitation to agroecological in the productive...
Effect of induced hydric stress with PEG 6000 on Stevia rebaudiana cv. ‘KH-IAN/VC-142’ in vitro growth
Drought is one of the most important abiotic stresses, since it limits the production and growth of Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni. The objective of the present work was to determine the effect of water stress ind...
Ochrobactrum anthropi, contaminants of in vitro culture of sugarcane cells and tissues
The purpose of this paper was to report, for first time, the presence of Ochrobactrum anthropi as contaminant of in vitro cell and tissue culture of sugarcane. Bacteria contaminant of in vitro plants were isolated direct...
In vitro multiplication of ‘FHIA-25’ (Musa spp., AAB) in Systems Temporary Immersion
Necessity to produce high quality planting material has required searching new alternatives to increase the efficiency of in vitro propagation methods and their automation, as in Temporary Immersion Systems (TIS). This...
