TRANSITIONAL PERIODS OF ISLAMIC EPICS IN THE CONTEXT OF DREAM PATTERN

Abstract

Epics have a very important place in Turkish Cultural History. They are both literary products and they have held a mirror to particular periods of Turkish Culture and History when examined in terms of historical, political, social, ethnographic and in many other perspectives. Starting from this point of view, the matters such as the way of life of Turks, their worldview and perspectives to the events can be reached in the epics. Perhaps, there has been so significant information on the customs and life styles of the societies that no other source includes this information. Turkey, with the adoption of Islam, has entered into a new culture circle. The works which can be considered as historical novels of folk literature Battalname, Danişmendname, and Saltukname are very important texts in terms of Turkishness and Islam’s spread and settlement in Anatolia and Rumelia. The transitional period of human life, such as birth, marriage and death processes have come into focus in the epics which are especially created under the influence of Islam. The dreams with epic motif play an important role in determining the action plans of hero in the Islamic-character epics. In this respect, the dreams have many functions such as prophesying, becoming muslim of non-muslims, and becoming guide for the hero. In this study, the epics that have developed in the influence of Islam are studied and what kind of impact it creates on the transition periods and what kind of functions it has are focused. The attained result, the dreams, in many situations from informing the parents before the birth, and whom the person will get married, and notifying the death to legacy, are seen functional in terms of the progress of the plot in the epics
