TRANSLATION DEFORMATIONS IN LITERARY TRANSLATION (BASED ON THE UKRAINIAN TRANSLATION OF THE NOVEL «11/22/63» BY S. KING)

Abstract

Translation deformations used in the Ukrainian literary translation of S. King’s novel «11/22/63» by O. Krasiuk have been studied in the proposed article. The existing defi nitions of the concept of translation deformations have been analyzed. Types of translation deformations have been described. Pragmatic, semantic and syntactic deformations in the Ukrainian translation of the novel have been identifi ed; their peculiar features have been characterized. It has been found out that pragmatic deformations occur in translation when the translator intentionally changes the communicative effect and the aesthetic function of the original. Semantic deformations involve transformations of the semiotic system of the original text by means of the target language semiotic system. They are caused by the asymmetry of linguistic world views between the English and Ukrainian languages. In the translation we have identifi ed semantic deformations accomplished by means of concretization, antonymic translation, meaning extension, addition and omission of language means. In case of syntactic deformations the translator changes the «thought patterns», defi ned by the author of the original at the syntactic level. It has been found out that translation deformations have a dual nature and comprise both objective language changes at different levels, caused by structural and cultural differences between source language and target language, and subjective transformations, caused by semantic and pragmatic differences of language units of the original and translation as well as translator’s creative choices.
