Journal Title: Вісник Житомирського державного університету імені Івана Франка - Year 2016, Vol 84, Issue 2
Abstract
Roald Dahl has this exceptional way of writing which makes his books an exciting and enjoyable experience for young readers. The author can create characters that are enjoyable and humorous, making them come alive on every page. Being one of the most eminent contemporary bellettrists, he owns such a distinct individual style that differs so much from the traditional didactic children’s literature in author’s violating language and cultural norms by means of using invective among other things. The term invective denotes speech or writing that attacks, insults or denounces a person or a topic, which involves the use of abusive and negative language. The tool of invective is employed in the analyzed fairy tales to show and mock people’s worst traits of character. The article is dedicated to analyzing invective and means of its verbalization in Roald Dahl’s fairy tales "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Matilda" and their translations made by V. Morozov (Ukrainian), O. Biriukov and M. Baron (Russian). The article presents a linguistic and stylistic analysis of translators’ decisions aimed at adequate interpreting of invective’s meaning and expressivity to make it a dominant of translations.
