TRAUMATIC CATARACT- AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDY

Journal Title: Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 44

Abstract

BACKGROUND Traumatic cataract is seen in ocular trauma and is one of the leading causes of unilateral blindness in the world. Visual recovery depends on intervention and regular follow-up for a period of 12 weeks. Traumatic cataract resulting from open- or closed-globe ocular trauma is one of the most common causes of blindness. Visual outcome is unpredictable, because this is not determined solely by the lens. There is a lack of standard classification, investigations and treatment guidelines related to the outcome with considerable debate regarding predictive models. We reviewed the epidemiology of traumatic cataract in a tertiary care institute. This study was an epidemiological study of traumatic cataract in cases of ocular trauma coming to the outpatient department of Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Hyderabad, Telangana, which is a tertiary care institute. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is an epidemiological, cross-sectional, observational study. This study was done in a tertiary eye care centre at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad, Telangana, during the period of January 2016 to December 2016. A total of 48 patients with traumatic cataract were subjected to a detailed history, systemic and local examination with relevant investigations. The age, sex and aetiology of traumatic cataract were included in the study described. Medical or surgical managements were done accordingly. Patients were subsequently followed-up and visual acuity was recorded. Appropriate statistical tests were applied. RESULTS 26 patients (54%) sustained penetrating trauma, while 22 (46%) had blunt injury. Out of a total of 48 patients, 34 (70.8%) patients were males, while 14 (29.2%) patients were females. Causative agents were stone, wood items, stick, metal objects etc. Among blunt trauma cases, 2 patients (9.1%) had perception of light, 14 patients (64%) had visual acuity of < 6/60, remaining 6 (26.9%) patients had a visual acuity ranging from 6/36 to 6/12. Among penetrating trauma cases, 16 patients (61.5%) had visual acuity of 6/60. Remaining 10 (38.5%) patients had a visual acuity ranging from 6/60 to 6/18. CONCLUSION This study provides data of patients with ocular trauma who developed traumatic cataract. Most of the patients were young males. Surgical intervention was needed to improve visual acuity. Most of the patients had good visual outcome with regular follow-ups.
