Abstract
The intensive development of tourism in the end of 18th – early 19th centuries gave rise to a new literary genre and a new type of edition – a travel guide-book. Travel guide-books combining features of itineraries and short road-books became multipurpose pocket encyclopedias that contained necessary information and much useful advice for travelers. With the lapse of time betterment of this type of editions has brought to its division after thematic features and arising of new special travel-guides telling about one or few cities, geographic regions or wellness resorts. As book was devoted to a smaller region, authors had an opportunity to present necessary information in more detailed way. Travel guide-books are interesting for modern researchers, because of the information about the culture, economics and ethnography, a road system, a development of tourism infrastructure etc. The set of travel guide-books from the collection of a count A. G. Stroganov also carries valuable information about its owner as a traveler over the European cities. His numerous notes on pages eloquently testify that all of travel guide-books were used as intended.
