TRIBOLOGICAL RESISTANCE INCREASE OF CAST IRON CYLINDER BRUSH SURFACE LAYER WITH THE APPLICATION OF LASER ABLATION TREATMENT

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 227, Issue 5

Abstract

Results of preliminary laboratory and technology tests of cast iron after laser modification are presented in the paper. In order to improve macro- and micro-geometry of the upper layer of cylinder sliding surface, a laser processing has been used for its modification (hollowing of oil micro-reservoirs in the upper zone of the sleeve using Nd:YAG laser with a special focusing system). A comparison of surface topographies modified using traditional mechanical methods with laser processed ones was made. Preliminary tests included a selection of optimum parameters of laser processing, investigations of surface topography, structural, hardness, and chemical composition in micro-volumes.
