TRIBOLOGICAL TESTING OF BEVEL GEARS. PART I – TEST RIG AND TEST METHODS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 242, Issue 2

Abstract

The paper presents a test rig and methods developed at the Institute for Sustainable Technologies in Radom for the tribological testing of spiral bevel gears. The idea resulted from a problem announced by some manufacturers concerning devices in which bevel gears are used (e.g. gearmotors), concerning an improvement in the reliability of the tests. Until now, widely used test devices and methods have allowed researchers to perform runs on only spur gears having the tooth geometry different than the geometry of bevel gears. Because there is a lack of the standardised, tribological test methods concerning bevel gears, test methods have been developed by the authors. They relate to research on the most dangerous modes of wear of bevel gears, such as scuffing/seizure and surface fatigue (pitting). The aim of these tests will be the determination of an effect of gear oils as well as modern techniques of surface modification by the deposition of thin, hard, low-friction coatings, on the mentioned modes of wear. This approach results from a potential requirement concerning the introduction of ecological oils (with a natural base) for the lubrication of gears, and the tendency to a reduction in the bevel gear temperature (due to lower friction), which is achievable through the application of low-friction coatings on the teeth of bevel gears.
