Trick in Muralist House: My Name is Red
Journal Title: Söylem Filoloji Dergisi - Year 2018, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Benim Adım Kırmızı (My Name Is Red), created by a synthesis of traditional oriental story and novel art, is composed of 59 episodes. The narrator of each episode is also the hero of the story narrated in that episode. The novel comprises of those interrelated stories narrated by different narrators. These narrators present themselves as an encomiast (publicstory-teller) at the beginning of the episode. Some of the narrators take one role, while some play more than one role and continue to tell their stories from where they left them. The narrator who narrates his story (these are people, animal, plant, color, death, devil or money) places many things like morals, law, trade, politics, especially love, and even a whole life into his/her/its story. One of the narrators who tells his story is Orhan. By placing -real or unreal- knowledge and interpretations into his text, the author wants the reader to feel that the text is actually a mixture of imagination and truth. Thus, the author both breaks the reality of the narration and also reminds us that we read a postmodern novel. Benim Adım Kırmızı (My Name Is Red) is a novel based on the idea that the change of mentality is very painful, and requires a heavy price.
