Abstract

The article analyzes the state of the Ukrainian Diaspora press in Canada in the early 20s. XX century, in the context of coverage of the beginning of the American Relief Administration in the territory of the former Russian Empire, which was under the control of the Bolsheviks. The ARA was related to helping the starving population of Soviet Russia and other Soviet republics during the famine of 1921–1923. It is worth noting quite a significant information company on the coverage of the activities of the ARA that took place in the Ukrainian Diaspora periodicals. The main center for printing Ukrainian-language newspapers in Canada was the city of Winnipeg, which published five periodicals. The first mention of the activities of the ARA on the territory controlled by the Bolsheviks appeared in the Ukrainian-language press of Canada in early August 1921 and with each subsequent month the content related to assistance from the ARA tended to increase. The Ukrainian Diaspora periodicals of Canada played a significant role in informing the Ukrainian society of North America about the state of affairs in overcoming the famine of 1921–1923. Today the information available in these newspapers is a valuable source in the field of research activities of American philanthropic organizations during the famine of 1921 1923 in the republics of the USSR.
