UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE ADAPTATION OF BUDNER'S QUESTIONNAIRE FOR USE IN THE NATIONAL POLICE
Journal Title: Psychological journal - Year 2019, Vol 5, Issue 8
Abstract
The article is devoted to the problem of the Ukrainian-language adaptation of the psychodiagnostic method “Tolerance to Ambiguity Scale” proposed by S. Budner. The study was conducted in order to improve professional psychological selection of personnel for the National Police of Ukraine. Today's interest in the study of an individual’s tolerance to ambiguity (uncertainty) is largely associated with studies showing the practical significance of this construct in various fields of work. Many authors argue that tolerance to ambiguity is important for success in legal, medical, pedagogical and some other professions. According to different researches, tolerance to ambiguity can correlate with intelligence, it is also associated with factors of the Big Five: positively with openness to experience and extraversion, negatively with neuroticism. The article outlines some theoretical foundations and the internal structure of the adaptation process, discloses the procedure and results of the study, aimed at verification of the reliability and validity of the adapted Budner questionnaire, the average-normative indicators for the total sample of police officers obtained at the study, and identifies new d test standards. According to the performed statistical analysis, a decrease in tolerance to uncertainty was revealed for women, and the age-related decline of this indicator was also noted for all police officers. The results obtained at the study show the highest level of tolerance to ambiguity for police officers, in comparison with that of civilians. The police officers can resist difficult problems and act in conditions of insolvability of a task. It was concluded that such personal quality as tolerance to ambiguity, can improve the efficiency of police officers’ work, allow them to better copy with unforeseen situations, search for alternative solutions of their tasks, increase stress resistance, enhance productive mechanisms of psychological defense (rationalization, sublimation, repression) and psychological readiness for action in special and extreme conditions. The results of the study confirmed the diagnostic verification of the adapted questionnaire.
