UKRAINIAN LITERARY STUDIES IN CIRCLE OF DISCUSSION ABOUT THE NEW REALISM OF THE FIRST THIRD OF THE XXth CENTURY

Abstract

There is some shortage of Ukrainian critics about the study of realism not only in exploration of past periods, but in our time. Rare finds and unique concepts acquire important significance. They are proposed in the research material about neorealism, which is difficult to determine, but confidently fixed in a creative heritage of famous Ukrainian authors. This article is devoted to comprehension of the style of artistic and literary phenomenon of the early twentieth century — a new realism (neorealism) in Ukrainian criticism. Works of famous Ukrainian writers Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka, Mykhailo Drahomanov, Mykola Zerov, Mykhailo Kotsyubinsky and others were used as material for analysis. In spite of the problematic nature of the study of stylistic identity of new realism, these authors have expressed similar opinions about the main features of neo-realism. Each of these authors found a common stylistic features of the new realism and on the examples of Ukrainian literature adduced the basic arguments about specificity of formation of neo-realism in artistic creativity of the first third of the twentieth century. Researchers attributed the rise to a new art with the state of something new that has brought with that era. In neorealism authors saw the actualization of the classic formulas of personality’s interpretation that transformed in the creation of social problems. In the articles about European and Ukrainian literature the authors of critical works identified the major features and functions of neorealism: ironic attitude of artists to the limitation of society and the world in general; frank freedom of opinion, circumstances, actions; instructive character, aimed at improving, raising human nature marked by equally good and evil. The authors attributed the simplicity of the plot, ordinariness of situations, invisible simplicity of artistic features, tendentious ease, complete inner freedom, absence of effects, the harsh reality of presentation and psychology. Critics, not having reached solid theoretical conclusions, reproduced own ideas about the nature of something new in realism, which is a unique material for further research.
