Ukrainian Version of FRAX: from Creation to Validation

Journal Title: Біль. Суглоби. Хребет - Year 2016, Vol 3, Issue 23

Abstract

FRAX® is an algorithm that computes 10-year probability of hip fracture and major osteoporotic fractures (hip, humerus, wrist fractures and clinical vertebral fractures) in patients aged 40 years and older. These probabilities are calculated based on age, body mass index and several clinical risk factors with or without the inclusion of bone mineral density at the femoral neck. Today, FRAX algorithm is included in most European and American recommendations for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. This article describes the results of the development and adaptation of a Ukrainian model of FRAX. In June 2016, this questionnaire became available in Ukrainian language thanks to the staff of Ukrainian Scientific-Medical Center of Osteoporosis and SI «Institute of Gerontology named after D.F. Chebotarev of NAMS Ukraine». In October 2016, thanks to the authors of this article, Ukrainian model was launched on the official FRAX website. This model was created on the basis of some epidemiological studies conducted in recent years by the members of the Ukrainian Association of Osteoporosis and Ukrainian-Scientific Medical Center of Osteoporosis supported by Ukrainian Association of Traumatologists and Orthopedists (particularly, in Vinnytsia (1997–2002) and Uzhhorod, and Vinnytsia region (STOP study, 2011–2012)). Ukrainian model of FRAX is the first domestic model of 10-year probability prediction, with risk of major osteoporotic fracture and hip fracture in mind. It was created using the original FRAX methodology, which was developed by the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Metabolic Bone Diseases. Its development provides the opportunity for its broad implementation in clinical practice.
