УКРАЇНСЬКІ РЕАЛІЇ В ДЗЕРКАЛІ АНГЛІЙСЬКОЇ ЛЕКСИКОГРАФІЇ

Abstract
У статті розглядається проблема побудови словникових дефініцій реалій української мови в англомовних словниках. Реаліями є назви властивих лише певним народам предметів національної культури, фактів історії, державних інститутів, імена фольклорних героїв, міфологічних істот тощо. Дослідження виконано на матеріалі низки англомовних словників: «Новий англійський словник на історичних принципах», словники Webster’s, Longman dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Oxford Dictionary. Проаналізовано приклади вдалих та невдалих тлумачень та їх лінгвокультурологічних ілюстрацій. більшість слів-реалій було подано транскрибуванням, деякі мають дефініцію в двомовних словниках; різні одномовні тлумачні, енциклопедичні словники надають інформацію про ту чи ту реалію з різним ступенем деталізації. Лінгвокраїнознавчі словники дають змогу не лише зрозуміти основні значення лексем, але й надають усю повноту семантичної структури мовної одиниці, мотивуючи її відомостями з культури та історії народу. Вони містять комплекс інформації про граматичні форми, сполучуваність, образні перенесення, фразеологічні одиниці – увесь національно-культурний фон, без якого неможливе глибоке опанування іноземних мов. Olena Panchenko. Ukrainian Realia Mirrored by English Dictionaries. The article deals with the problem of constructing vocabulary definitions of Ukrainian realia in English dictionaries. The realias are the names inherent only to certain peoples objects of national culture, facts of history, state institutions, names of folk heroes, mythological beings, etc. The research is based on a series of English-language dictionaries: New English Dictionary on Historical Principles, Webster's Dictionaries, Longman Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, and Oxford Dictionary. Examples of successful and unsuccessful interpretations and their linguistic and cultural illustrations are analyzed. Most of the real-world words were transcribed some have a definition in bilingual dictionaries; various monolingual interpretative, encyclopedic dictionaries provide information about a particular realia with varying degrees of detalisation. In its semantic content, each realia consists of a certain number of semes that create its denotative and connotative meaning (which carries ethno-cultural information). There are cases when denotative information retreats to the background, and information is predominantly connotational, in particular, national-cultural, local. Thus, the Ukrainian "pumpkin" in the Ukrainian-English binary comparison is not realignment in the denotative plan: in the flora of the English-speaking world there is also the same vegetable as pumpkin. But the Ukrainian word "pumpkin" is a realization of the English language as a target and, in fact, to all languages of the world, when it is used in the connotative meaning as a symbol of denial in proposal. And if we consider this reality as a phraseologism-the "give a pumpkin" reality, we will find in the dictionaries a phrase "to refuse a proposal of marriage," which will not carry any connotative meaning at all. Linguistic studies dictionaries make it possible not only to understand the basic values of the lexemes, but also to provide all the completeness of the semantic structure of the linguistic unit, by motivating its information from the culture and history of the people. They contain a complex of information on grammatical forms, connectivity, figurative transitions, phraseological units - the entire national-cultural background, without which it is impossible to master foreign languages profoundly.
