Abstract
This paper aims at reflecting on basic translation procedures. The object of this analysis is a song written by Tom Jobim and Newton Mendonça, Samba de uma nota so, which was translated from Portuguese to English by Jobim himself; therefore, it is a case of interlingual translation. The discussion start by defining translation itself and the verb to translate, then briefly accounts for its history in ancient times and its relation to literature. Then some parts of Samba de uma Nota Só and its version in English are examined by the point of view of some representatives of the "Geração de 45", or generation from 45.
