Undergraduate Pharmacology: Student’s view – A Questionnaire Study
Journal Title: Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology Advances - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
Pharmacology, a branch of medicine is progressing by leaps and bounds. But the place and status of pharmacology in the medical curriculum is hazy. Medical students decry the way it is taught, its examinations, its usefulness when they practice. Hence these study to evaluate and analyze undergraduate pharmacology teaching. Second year MBBS students who were due to appear for the University exams participated in the study. Self made questionnaires with ten questions were distributed to the students. Questionnaire was designed based on the internationally accepted ‘Liekert Scale’. Analysis was based on the median score, and percentage wise distribution of the various parameters used in the questionnaire. Students are in favour of many changes in pharmacology like distribution of handouts before lectures (75.41%), teaching physiology before pharmacology (76.31%), power point lectures (70.42%), Problem based curriculum (73.44%), clinical pharmacology (61.49%). There should be a continuous interaction between the clinicians and the pharmacologists at the level of teaching of pharmacotherapy, and pharmacology should be taught along with the clinical teaching. A fresh and revised curriculum which is clinically oriented and devoid of experimental pharmacology is the need of the hour.
