Urban Ports: Gateways to Post Modern Cities or Theme Parks?

Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2009, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

Throughout recent decades, old ports have become new opportunities to renew their cities. In the location that the ruined spaces of the old port was located, a new kind of port, the urban port, has grown, in an effort to reactivate the city center and give these cities a prominent place on the global level. These urban ports, considered entry ports or gateways to the economic, human, social, and cultural resources that enrich the cities have often become, according to some critics, theme parks that have little or nothing to do with the identity of the city. Urban ports seem to oscillate between double roles: gateways for a new mode of production, or theme parks. In this brief text, we will seek to deny the apparent dichotomy of the two kinds of urban port and to develop some reflections that have arisen from a comparison of several port renovations that will lead us to a better understanding of the dynamics that began nearly ffty years ago.
