Journal Title: The Odisha Journal of Psychiatry - Year 2018, Vol 26, Issue 1

Abstract

Urbanisation is a continuous process. With growing urbanisation, more and more people are exposed to risk factors originating from the urban social (e.g. poverty) or physical environment (e.g. traffic noise), contributing to increased stress, which in turn is negatively associated with mental health. The disorders associated with urbanisation is enormous and includes psychoses, depression, sociopathy, substance abuse, alcoholism, crime, delinquency, vandalism, family disintegration, and alienation. Urbanisation affects the entire population especially the vulnerable sections of society - elderly, children, adolescents and women. This phenomenon has been observed not only in poor and backward countries, but also in developed parts of the World. Key words: Urbanization, Mental health.
