Usage of intraoral camera in orthodontics

Abstract
AIM: to present the possibilities of using a high-qualityintraoral camera with an extraoral function to take intraandextraoral photographs in everyday orthodontic practice.Intraoral camera working with a computer via a digitalconnection, with a colour printer and LCD screens wasinstalled in office. To process the digital image the softwareWin Vix Pro was used.MATERIAL: 127 patients aged from 6 to 38 years,who reported for a diagnostic visit, were included to thestudy. In patients who commenced the treatment, photographswere taken in order to register treatment stages.METHOD: while taking extraoral photographs, specialattention was paid to keep a proper distance betweenthe camera head and the patient’s head, in order to avoidthe effect of wide lens, the so called fish eye effect. Mostintraoral photographs were taken without the use of mirrors.RESULTS: the patients included in the research, regardlessof the age, were keen to see directly the images onthe computer screen, during follow-up visits.CONCLUSIONS: photographs taken are useful intreatment planning, and also constitute of the basic elementsof obligatory documentation. The technique of takingthe photographs is not complicated. The quality ofdigital images is satisfactory. Photographs which can beviewed by the patient during the visit directly on the computerscreen facilitate and enhance verbal communicationwith the patient and motivate him/her to undertake treatment.(Orthod.
