Using maximum entropy to predict the distribution of a critically endangered reptile species (Eryx jaculus, Reptilia: Boidae) at its Northern range limit
Journal Title: Advances in Environmental Sciences - International Journal of the Bioflux Society - Year 2009, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
The sand boa (Eryx jaculus) is one of the least known and rarest reptile species in Europe. In Romania, the sand boa is the rarest reptile species with only four locality records being known; at Cernavodă, Cărpiniş-Giuvegea, Cochirleni and Mahmudia (Kirițescu 1903; Fuhn & Vancea 1961; Zinke & Hielscher 1990). To estimate the predictors and the probability distribution of the target species (Eryx jaculus) we used MaxEnt 3.3. The potential distribution model of E. jaculus in Romania have a very good score performance (AUC = 0.959). The most important variables for the model are BIO13 (92.5% of contribution), BIO9 (3.2% of contribution), BIO17 (3% of contribution) and BIO6 (1.3% of contribution). A previously mentioned hypothesis regarding the extinction of the sand boa from Romania hold the construction of the Danube River – Black Sea canal as the main responsable factor, this construction having destroyed most of the natural habitats in which the species has been recorded (Krecsak & Iftime 2006). We also support this hypothesis as the generated model indicates a suitable niche for the species along the current canal area.

A checklist of malacofauna from Pondicherry mangroves
The Pondicherry mangroves is located (Long: 11o 46’03” to 11o 53’ 40” N; Lat: 79o 49’45” to 79o 48’ 00” E) on the Bay of Bengal (Coramendal Coast) seaboard. A survey has been made during January 2009 to know the pattern...
New locality records for the adder (Vipera berus) in the Carpathian Corner, Romania
The Carpathian Corner region (Buzău and Vrancea Counties) is one of the Romanian areas in which data on the herpetofauna is most scarce. The adder (Vipera berus), a widespread but threatened Romanian snake species...
The influence of parasites on harmful insects of the deciduous forests of the north of Argeş county
This article presents a study on the parasites of harmful insects of the acacia and oak forests from the superior basin of Doamnei river. Between 2008-2011, we identified in these forests the following species of harmful...
Forest vegetation in the upper Iara basin. Considerations on plants diversity.
Forests cover important areas in Romania, but are poorly investigated from a biological point of view. Forestry studies are focused on economic productivity, while biological studies have focused on phytosociological des...
Development of biotic index based on rapid bioassessment approaches using benthic macroinvertebrates for Chi and Mun headwater streams, northeast Thailand.
The objective of present study is to select high performance metrics for developing a multimetrics biotic index to assess headwater stream conditions of the Chi and Mun basins in northeastern Thailand (Khorat Platau (Mek...
