Variation of Stress intensity factor and elastic T-stress along the crack-front in finite thickness plates
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2009, Vol 3, Issue 8
Abstract
Non-singular terms in the series expansion of the elastic crack-tip stress fields, commonly referred to as the T-stress. The T-stress is as an additional stress field characterizing parameter to stress intensity factor (K) in the analysis of cracked bodies. T-stress is used as an important constraint parameter in the fracture analysis. In this investigation, three-dimensional finite element analyses have been conducted to compute the elastic T-stress considering a single edge notched tensile (SENT) specimen with varied thickness and a/W ratio. The results indicate that the T-stress depends on the specimen thickness and significantly varies along the crack-front from surface to centre of the specimen. The T-stress results obtained in the present analysis together with corresponding KI values can be used for analysis of constraint effects in a fracture specimen.

Applications of lattice method in the simulation of crack path in heterogeneous materials
The simulation of critical and subcritical crack propagation in heterogeneous materials is not a simple problem in computational mechanics. These topics can be studied with different theoretical tools. In the crac...
Crack path simulation for cylindrical contact under fretting conditions
In this work different strategies to estimate crack path for cylindrical contacts under fretting conditions are carried out. The main goal is to propose and to evaluate methodologies not only to estimate the ...
Crack propagation mechanism and life prediction for very-high-cycle fatigue of a structural steel in different environmental medias
The influence of environmental medias on crack propagation of a structural steel at high and very-high-cycle fatigue (VHCF) regimes is investigated based on the fatigue tests performed in air, water and 3.5% NaCl aqueous...
Infrared thermography study of the fatigue crack propagation
The work is devoted to the experimental study of heat dissipation process caused by fatigue crack propagation. To investigate a spatial and time temperature evolution at the crack tip set of experiments was carried...
Numerical modelling of ductile damage mechanics coupled with an unconventional plasticity model
Ductility in metals includes the material’s capability to tolerate plastic deformations before partial or total degradation of its mechanical properties. Modelling this parameter is important in structure and compo...
