Vitamin D Revisited: Impact on Osteoporosis
Journal Title: Women's Health – Open Journal - Year 2015, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
With the now widespread recognition that the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis has a major impact on healthcare, the various components and contributing factors to this condition is the subject of many recent and ongoing studies. One of these contributing factors is vitamin D, and it is obvious from a review of the literature that there is no scarcity of research on this topic. This vitamin is the subject of many studies even in areas other than bone health. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) expert committee found inconsistent evidence of the alleged role of vitamin D in conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and immunity. They found that the evidence existing to date is inconsistent and does not demonstrate a causeand-effect relationship.
