WHAT SHORT OF EMOTIONS DO WE EXPERIENCE DURING OUR FIRST GLIDER FLIGHT AND OUR FIRST PARACHUTE JUMP?

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 5

Abstract

Background. Is R. Solomon’s theory of contrary emotions true? His theory aims to provide insight into various processes related to human behaviour, such as drug addiction, love, infatuation, social bonds, sexual desire, aesthetic experience (this concerns only the cases in which intensification of experience is positive), as well as into emotions triggered by parachute jumps, jogging, participating in marathons, or using the sauna. According to the creator of the theory R. Solomon, persons doing their first parachute jump ever, before the parachute opens, are filled with terror, so they scream at the top of their lungs, their pupils are dilated and eyes wide open, their body is stiff and twisted, their heart is thumps, and their breath is irregular.Material and methods. The theory was verified when the subject were performing their first parachute jumps and glider flights. For research purposes, a specially designed tool was used, which measured the level of activation, value, and type of emotion. The same person was repeatedly subjected to the test. A sport-tester was used to measure pulse rate, and therefore to verify the level of activation.Results. It turned out that emotional processes are much more complex in such cases than R. Solomon’s research carried out on dogs would suggest. During the first parachute jump/glider flight there is no contrast of positive vs. negative emotions. Positive and negative emotions can coexist.Conclusions. The results indicate that performing activities, generally considered risky and dangerous, triggers a whole range of various emotions. Research participants named from a few to over ten emotions which they were experiencing just before the jump/flight. Human behaviour in extreme situations such as first parachute jumps or glider flights with a windlass is a complex and complicated process, during which a whole range of emotional processes occurs, determining whether a jump or a flight is safe or not.
