WHY DO WE NEED MULTIMEDIA?
Journal Title: Muzealnictwo - Year 2014, Vol 55, Issue
Abstract
Modern Polish museums tend to expand their exhibitions to include multimedia installations and interactive solutions. This strategy is usually adopted by new museums created from scratch, in particular narrative museums using multimedia solutions as a basic axis for creating exhibitions. Multimedia sometimes become even more important than museum collectibles which are not numerous in newly created museums. Traditional museums also tend to incorporate more interactive solutions and multimedia installations in their existing exhibitions. When visiting museums in Poland it may seem that these are very modern institutions keeping up with technological development and making best efforts to prepare attractive exhibitions for their visitors. However, technological solutions sometimes seem to be dominant to the content that should be illustrated. Are museums ready for this specific technological revolution in terms of planning and structure? Are museums aware of modern technology? Are multimedia useful in museums at all? How should multimedia be planned and implemented in museums so that they make sense, constitute no financial burden, embellish the exhibitions, highlight but not cover the presented items and allow the visitors to gain knowledge about the exhibits? The above questions should be considered by museum employees who are planning to introduce multimedia solutions in their institutions. Above all, they should keep in mind that multimedia in museums are not as important as contents presented by museums and exhibits which should be only supplemented by multimedia.
