Wilson’s disease – the clinical picture, diagnosis and treatment

Abstract
Wilson’s Disease (hepatolenticular degeneration) is an autosomal recessive disorder of copper metabolism leading to pathological copper accumulation in many tissues (mainly liver, brain, kornea and kidneys) with secondary damage of affected organs. As a disease, WD is known since the beginning of XX century, but the diagnosis of WD, it is still a great challenge for physicians, what is caused mainly by wide spectrum of symptoms of the disease and different clinical forms. The patients complaints could be only hepatic, neurologic, psychiatric (mood disorders) or atypical metabolic (secondary to liver failure or copper intoxication). The diversity of WD signs caused that WD patients are many times diagnosed wrongly, and not treated WD is leading to death. The authors presented the possibilities of different clinical picture of WD, accessible diagnostic tools which let diagnose WD and their limitations as well as proposed AASLD (American Association for the Study of Liver Disease) recommendation according WD diagnosis and treatment.
