Wisdom teeth role in etiology of late lower arch crowding –review of literature
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2006, Vol 2, Issue 3
Abstract
AIM: Tertiary crowding is currently rated as the mostoften encountered malocclusion in sagittal plane. The thirdmolars influence on that kind of crowding was taken upthroughout many years. The review of the literature wascarried out to get to know the opinions on this subject. Theaim of this study was also to justify the extraction of wisdomteeth as prevention measure of the crowding in latethe lower arch.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pub Med, Medlineand Ebsco bases have been used for finding articles publishedin renowned journals. Key words like: tertiary crowding, late lower arch crowding and third molars were usedin the base.RESULTS: 24 articles were chosen because of theirconnexion with the subject of study.CONCLUSIONS: Views of researchers on presentedproblem are confusing. Most frequently the increase of tertiarycrowding was observed during the time of wisdomteeth eruption. Some of the studies prove also, that prophlactically extraction of those teeth is connected with betterstability of lower teeth in subjects untreated orthodonticallyas well as in treated patients after retention stage. Wisdomteeth are considered to be one of the most significantcausative factors of development of tertiary crowding. However, results of other research can not be ignored, theyshow that this malocclusion develops also in patients withthird molar agenesis. There is a need of further studies toestablish the role of the extraction wisdom teeth in tertiarycrowding prevention. (Orthod. Forum 2006; 2:67-73)
