Abstract

THE HISTORY AND THE CONTENT OF THE ARCHIVE OF BARTOSZEWICZS’ FAMILY In 1928 Kazimierz Bartoszewicz, a historian, journalist, editor and art collector, gave an extremely precious family collection to the city of Lodz. It consisted of the library with 2,5–3 thousand books, mainly rare. Also, the collection contained historical archive formed from valuable manuscripts, diplomas, acts, personal documents and artistic series. Over time the collection was divided. The library was placed in the Municipal Public Library (at present – The Jozef Pilsudski Regional and Municipal Public Library in Lodz), the artistic series – in Municipal Museum of Art (at present – Museum of Art in Lodz). The third part – the archive of historical and literary documents – was placed in the Municipal Archive. Nowadays, these materials belong to the huge fond which is preserved in the State Archive in Lodz and it consists of 3868 archival units. The documents are between 1552–1933 and most of them are connected with work, literary, social and political activities of the family members. The distinct part of fond is the collection of valuable and diversified documents of Polish kings, secular and clerical dignitaries, newspapers, silva rerum, printed materials and magazines, leaflets, appeals, authorities, political parties and association charters.
