Journal Title: IOSR Journal of Pharmacy (IOSRPHR) - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 5

Abstract

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is one of the most common endocrine disorder in the women belonging to reproductive age. It is a metabolic endocrine disorder with long time consequences like type 2 diabetes .The increased risk for cardiovascular diseases in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome is due to diabetes, adipositas and dislipidemia. The insulin resistance plays a major role in pathopysiology of this syndrome, this makes the use of oral antidiabetic drugs more necessarly. Metformin was logically introduced to establish the extent to which hyperinsulinaemia influences the pathogenisis of the condition. Diagnosis can be difficult because the signs and symptoms may include hirsutism, infertility, menustral irregularities, and biochemical abnormalities. So therapy should target specific condition and individualized patient goals. Metformin and clomiphene, alone or in combination are first line agents for ovulation induction.Insulin-sensitizing agents, oral contraceptives, and topical eflornithine can be used in patients with hirsutism.
