A Content Analysis Related to Keywords in Scientific Studies Prepared on Academic Turkish

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the keywords used in scientific articles and postgraduate theses written on academic Turkish in the context of teaching Turkish as a foreign language and to determine the frequency of their usage. Within the scope of the research, a literature review is conducted, and a total of 38 studies on academic Turkish in the field of teaching Turkish as a foreign language (24 scientific articles, 6 master’s theses, and 8 PhD dissertations) are identified. The data of the study are analyzed using the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research techniques. The keywords are found to be classified under nine main themes: language and language teaching, language skills, vocabulary, linguistics, technology and material usage, student opinions and attitudes, teaching methods and techniques, literature review studies, and content design. The findings reveal that the most frequently used keyword is “academic Turkish” (22 times), followed by “academic writing” (12 times), “international students” (8 times), and “needs analysis” (6 times). The theme of language and language teaching includes 15 different keywords with a total of 54 usages, indicating a focus on this area. The theme of language skills includes 17 different keywords with a total of 32 usages, where “academic writing” emerges as the most prominent. However, it is noted that other language skills (reading, listening, and speaking) are largely neglected. The study also observes limited usage of keywords related to vocabulary, linguistics, and material usage. These findings indicate that research in the field of academic Turkish predominantly focuses on writing skills but requires more effort to develop other language skills. Additionally, the frequent use of various terminologies in the field is noted to cause challenges for researchers in accessing the literature.
