Migration in the Narratives of “Tantûralı Kadın” and "Fotoğrafta Ayrı Duran”

Abstract
Migration is the act of individuals leaving their current place of residence due to political, economic, or social reasons and relocating to another place or even another country. Whether voluntary or forced, migration profoundly impacts individuals not only economically and politically but also psychologically. In this context, literature cannot directly solve the issues stemming from migration but serves as one of the most effective ways to shed light on these experiences, provide new perspectives, and foster understanding of people striving to rebuild their lives. Radwa Ashour’s Tantûralı Kadın (The Woman from Tantura) is a powerful novel that explores the theme of migration through a chronological narrative. With autobiographical elements, it vividly portrays the struggles and the psychological impact of migration on a Palestinian woman. On the other hand, Cihan Aktas’s Fotoğrafta Ayrı Duran (Separate in the Photograph) delves into the experiences of Syrian refugees, drawing upon stories and observations from refugee camps. The book comprises fourteen stories that examine the challenges refugees face and how their presence disrupts and reshapes established societal norms. This study compares the treatment of the migration theme in Tantûralı Kadın and Fotoğrafta Ayrı Duran, highlighting their similarities and differences. While Tantûralı Kadın focuses on the narratives of Palestinian refugees, emphasizing trauma, nostalgia, and the sense of belonging, Fotoğrafta Ayrı Duran presents the stories of Syrian refugees, exploring cultural adaptation and the societal tensions created by their displacement. Both works offer profound insights into the multifaceted nature of migration and its enduring impact on individuals and communities.
