A methodological exploration of bioactive components of the traditional Chinese medicines guided by in vivo absorption and distribution characters of the constituents

Abstract
By using a Tibetan herbal medicine Halenia elliptica L. (a liver protect remedy) as an example, a method to investigate bioactive components of the traditional Chinese medicines (TCM), under a guidance of in vivo absorption and distribution characters of the chemical constituents of TCM, was explored. The in vivo absorption and distribution characters of the chemical constituents of TCM were determined by HPLC-DAD-ESIMS, 8 chemical constituents of H. elliptica that are absorbed and distributed organs and tissues of mice were isolated and identified. Several constituents showed antioxidant, liver-protect, and cytotoxic activities in the in vitro assays. This study indicated that the explored method is feasible, and valuable.
