A Review of Whitefly Management Techniques For Sustainable Agriculture

Abstract

Whitefly Bemisia tabaci Gennadius, is a sap-sucking insect pest that is well-known for wreaking havoc on crops and reducing yields by both its own eating and the spread of viruses and diseases to the crops. Foliar application of insecticides is essential for effective control of B. tabaci; nevertheless, this practice has negative consequences, including environmental contamination, insect pest resistance and comeback, pollinator toxicity, and reduction in crop yield. Due to this reason, there is a need for an effective, safe, and reasonable method to reduce the population of whiteflies in agricultural settings. Transgenic plants that are resistant to whiteflies have just a few reports available, and even those are either unverifiable or need more testing and approval from the GEAC, MoEF, and EPA before they can be used. Whitefly management (WFM), integrated pest management (IPM), and the future of WFM in ensuring food and farm security are all discussed in detail in this study.
