A study of bile leak as a complication of hepatobiliary surgery

Abstract

Background: Hepatobiliary surgery is one of the common procedure in both laparoscopic and open approach. With improved laparoscopic technique and instrumentation complication decreases over time. The Billiary complication cause severe morbidity and mortality. The aim of study is to analyze biliary leak as a complication of hepatobilliary surgery ,its severity, management approach and outcome. Methods: The retrospective study was done from july 2009 to august 2012, of patients undergoing hepatobilliary procedure .Total 750 patients were analyzed and followed up 1 month after discharge. Results: Total 19 cases of billiary leak were reported and managed according to severity, with eventual mortality of 2 patients. Conclusions: Biliary leak as a hepatobilliary complication causes greater morbidity and mortality .Now a days, with improved technique in laparoscopy, complication has been decreased.
