A Study of the factors associated with the nonhealing ulcers at tertiary health care centre

Abstract
Background: An ulcer is defined as a full thickness loss of epidermis and some dermis, which heals with scarring. Aims and Objectives: To Study the factors associated with the non-healing ulcers at tertiary health care centre. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study carried out in the patients with non-healing ulcers at the department of surgery of a tertiary health care centre during the two years period i.e. January 2016 to January 2018. A non-healing or chronic wound is defined as a wound that does not improve after four weeks or does not heal in eight weeks were considered as non healing wounds as per this there were 69 patients were included into the study. The statistical analysis done by Standard error of proportions (Z-test). Result: The majority of the patients were in the age group of >60 were 27.54%, followed by 50-60 were 24.64%, 40-50 were 18.84%, 30-40 were 15.94%, 20-30 were 13.04%. The increasing trend of the disease with respect to age is statistically significant (Spearman correlation, r=1, p<0.002).The majority of the patients were Male i.e. 71.02%, followed by Female 28.98 %.The most common significantly associated risk factors were Diabetes (Z=4.52,p<0.05), Varicose vein (Z=5.67,p<0.05), Iron Deficiency Disease (Z=4.85,p<0.05), H/o Smoking (Z=5.43,p<0.05), Peripheral Vascular disease (Z=3.45,p<0.05 ), Old age (Z=3.12,p<0.05) Conclusion: The most common associated risk factors were Diabetes, Varicose vein, Iron Deficiency Disease, H/o Smoking, Peripheral Vascular disease, Old age.
