A study of the role of acute phase reactants – C-reactive protein and procalcitonin in predicting the severity of sepsis

Abstract

Background: Sepsis is a serious clinical condition that represents a patient’s response to a severe infection and has a very high mortality rate. Aims and Objectives: to study the role of Acute phase reactants – C-reactive protein and procalcitonin in predicting the severity of sepsis. Materials and Methodology: This present study was a hospital based study for evaluation of role of Acute phase reactants – C-reactive protein and procalcitonin in predicting the severity sepsis in surgical conducted at Dr D.Y. Patil hospital and research institute, Pimpri, Pune during July 2014 to September 2016. Data analysis was done using the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) Version 17 for window Results: Mean CRP levels were significantly raised from baseline to day 3 after surgery and later on it was significantly reduced as compared to baseline. (p<0.0001). Mean procalcitonin levels were significantly raised from baseline to day 3 after surgery and later on it was significantly reduced as compared to baseline. (p<0.0001) but both CRP and procalcitonin were not correlated with organ failure or dysfunction among the cases with sepsis (p>0.05). Conclusion: It can be concluded from our study that CRP and Procalcitonin levels were significantly raised among the cases with sepsis but both CRP and procalcitonin were not correlated with organ failure or dysfunction among the cases with sepsis.
