Abstract

Background:To access oral hygiene status in complete denture wearers and aid in improving the denture hygiene awareness and habits. Method: This study aims to evaluate the oral hygiene methods and habits in complete denture wearers and whether patients follow the given instructions by the dentist or not. Setting & Design: Questionnaire based study in a Dental Institute Methods And Materials: This study was conducted in the Department of Prosthodontics, at an institute in Gujarat, over a period of 6 months. The study included 190 complete denture wearers who reported for follow-ups during the study period. They were selected randomly with age ranging from 45-75 years including both the sexes. A total of 12 questions inquiring about various denture hygiene habits and instructions were included in the questionnaire. The questionnaire was approved by the Institutional Ethical committee. Results:It was observed that 66.3% of the participants were given instructions on how to clean their dentures and the most common aid of cleaning the denture was with a toothbrush and paste (45.8%) and Cleansing tablets was the method of choice for only 7% of all the respondents. Conclusion: This study suggested that the majority of the denture wearers have limited knowledge of denture cleansing and oral hygiene practices. So dental practitioners should reinforce denture hygiene instructions to help the patients reap maximum benefits out of their prostheses.
