Aestheticization of Shakespeare in Ukrainian Translations: the Case of "Coriolanus".

Abstract

The paper focuses on the set of transformations in the Ukrainian translation of William Shakespeare’s "Coriolanus" by Dmytro Pavlychko that can be treated as manifestations of the strategy of aestheticization in translation. On the one hand, the aestheticizing approach originates from the certain aesthetic viewpoints that influenced Dmytro Pavlychko’s original creative practice as well as his translation practice (basically those represented by the Ukrainian Neoclassicists and their followers); on the other hand, it results from the established canonical image of Shakespeare and his works in the Ukrainian literary culture. The paper brings to light the meaning of the term "aestheticization" in the context of the creative practice of Neoclassicists who were the Founding Fathers of the present-day Ukrainian poetic translation, and dwells on the historical and theoretical context that influenced the development of Dmytro Pavlychko’s individual translation strategy. The earlier translation of the tragedy by Panteleimon Kulish serves as a benchmark for the analysis of the later translator’s decisions that as a whole serve as manifestations of the aestheticization strategy. The particular techniques of aestheticization in Pavlychko’s version of "Coriolanus" include, among others, replacement of fixed terms by words from the general vocabulary, the editing of grammatical inconsistencies, the expansion of Coriolanus’ utterances, e.g. by using elements of poetic speech (synonyms, epithets), as well as reduction of some words and phrases considered to be "non-poetic".
