AN ESTIMATION OF SELECTED MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF THE HYDRODYNAMIC THRUST BEARING POLYMER LINING

Abstract
Polymer materials are used more and more frequently for linings in hydrodynamic thrust bearings. The reason for that is that they exhibit many advantages in comparison with traditional bearings with babbitted pads. Relevant data on mechanical and thermal properties of composite materials used as coatings for hydrodynamic bearings seems essential for making successful theoretical investigations focused on predicting reliably their performance. In this paper, original experimental methods for the evaluation of the most important mechanical (modulus of elasticity) and thermal (heat conduction coefficient) properties of polymer lining of fluid film thrust bearings are proposed and discussed. Computer simulation of the tests is used to predict their results and to investigate feasibility of the methods. The difficulties of this research comes from the available shapes of the test pieces, which will be cut out from the bearing pad. Because of this, it will not be possible to use standard methods.<br/><br/>
