An Overview of the Importance of Biomarkers and Challenges in Neuroscience drug Discovery

Abstract

Biomarkers are widely used for disease diagnosis, treatment response monitoring, and the development of novel therapeutics. However, advances in establishing biomarkers for disorders of the nervous system have been disappointing. Recently, with the increasing pathophysiological understanding of mental disorders, which has been accompanied by careful examination at the molecular level, the possibility of predicting and tracking candidate biomarkers has also improved. The present study aims to focus on objective, measurable molecular properties instead of using subjective and variable clinical criteria. It is suggesting that diagnostic and therapeutic approaches can be developed; in addition, the use of surrogate biomarkers can be cost-effective in terms of time, cost, and invasion. It is worth mentioning, animal models of psychiatric phenotypes and omics methods also in vivo imaging technologies are important tools for detecting biomarkers. Furthermore, we discuss the challenges of biomarkers in neuroscience including the complexity of these disorders, the lack of strong molecular correlation, and the phenotypic heterogeneity. As a conclusion, potential benefits, challenges, and opportunities of using biomarkers in drug discovery and development of neuroscience are summarized and discussed.
