Analysis and reflection on survey results for oral diseases in 420 officers and soldiers of a western unit

Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 9

Abstract

Objective To investigate the oral health status of grass-roots troops, and combined with the investigation results, put forward the diagnosis and treatment range of oral sergeants in grass-roots troops for reference. Methods A questionnaire was designed based on the fourth military oral health survey standard, and a cluster sampling method was adopted to investigate oral diseases among officers and soldiers in a western unit. Results A total of 420 officers and soldiers in a western unit were included in the survey. The prevalence rate of caries was 53. 80% (95% CI: 49. 0% ~ 58. 6% ), the decayed, missing, and filled teeth index was 1. 99, and the prevalence of dental calculus was 75. 24% . A total of 1 636 teeth ( including impacted teeth, decayed wisdom teeth and residual roots) needed treatment, of which 41. 97% teeth needed filling, 16. 25% teeth needed pit and fissure sealing, and 35. 92% teeth needed extraction. Binary logistic regression was used to explore the effects of age, time of enlistment, education level, source of enlistment and military rank on prevalence of caries. Omnibus test of model coefficient P = 0. 226 showed that the above factors had no effect on caries. Mann-Whitney U test compared the wisdom teeth of officers and soldiers who had been enlisted for five years or less with those who had been enlisted for more than five years, and concluded that there was a significant difference between the removed wisdom teeth (P < 0. 01), that is, the longer the time of enlistment was, the more impacted wisdom teeth were removed. Conclusion In order to meet the needs of grass-roots oral medical treatment, grass-roots oral sergeants should master the techniques of filling, vital-pulp preservation, pit and fissure sealing, supragingival and subgingival scaling, and simple teeth extraction, and actively carry out the prevention of oral diseases.
