Anatomical defects of the masticatory system and speech sound disorders in children aged 7-10 years

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2018, Vol 71, Issue 1

Abstract

The defects of the masticatory system and speech sound disorders most probably have the same causes and similar consequences - both increase the risk of dental and periodontal disease. Objective: The study was to establish the correlation between the anatomical defects of the masticatory system and speech sound disorders in children. Methods: Three hundred patients aged 7-10 years were examined to detect oral anatomical defects, check their occlusion, and detect potential speech sound disorders. Anatomical defects were assessed in patients with and without speech sound disorders. Results: Anatomical defects of the masticatory system concurred more often with speech sound disorders than with correct articulation and lead to them. There was a strong correlation between: - any type of malocclusion and errors on /t/, /d/, /n/, /s/, /z/, /t͡s/, /d͡z/, /ɕ/, /ʑ/, /t͡ɕ/, /d͡ʑ/, /ʂ/, /ʐ/, /t͡ʂ/, /d͡ʐ/ sounds, - open bite and errors on /t/, /d/, /n/, /s/, /z/, /t͡s/, /d͡z/, /ɕ/, /ʑ/, /t͡ɕ/, /d͡ʑ/, /ʂ/, /ʐ/, /t͡ʂ/, /d͡ʑ/ sounds, - short lingual frenulum and errors on /p/, /b/, /m/ sounds, - gothic palate and errors on /t/, /d/, /n/ sounds, - mesioclusion and errors on /t/, /d/, /n/, /s/, /z/, /t͡s/, /d͡z/, /ɕ/, /ʑ/, /t͡ɕ/, /d͡ʑ/ sounds. Conclusion: In order to implement effective early prevention and treatment, it is crucial to know the correlation between the masticatory system and speech sound disorders, as it reduces treatment duration and minimalises relapses of not only communication disorders, but also of concurrent masticatory system disorders.
