Anchorage in orthodontics – a review of literature
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2014, Vol 10, Issue 4
Abstract
According to the Newton’s third law of motion for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This law also applies in orthodontics and is a basis of anchorage. It is a subject discussed in many studies and articles and associated with various theories. Some of them have been clinically proven, whereas others are still a subject of further studies. Aim of the work. The work aims to present a subject of anchorage and a review of literature regarding current approaches to this problem. Material and methods. A review of the literature from the years 1988– 2014 was conducted with the help of the PubMed database and the following key words: anchorage, classification, sources of anchorage, skeletal anchorage, anchorage loss. The studies were supplemented with papers published by Polish and foreign authors regarding this field. Results. 34 positions were selected and analysed. Conclusions. Anchorage requirements have to be set individually for each patient. There are many methods to reinforce anchorage that are used under clinical conditions; however, some of them have not been sufficiently scientifically proven. The issue of anchorage, widely discussed in the literature, still requires further studies, and clear guidelines helping practitioners select a treatment regimen have yet to be formulated.
