Anomalies associated with impacted canines

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2015, Vol 11, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction. Impacted canines are present inapproximately 1–2% of orthodontic patients. The aetiologyof this anomaly is not fully known and general, local andidiopathic factors can affect its incidence. Aim. The aimof the study was to assess anomalies associated withimpaction of canines in the maxilla and the mandible.Material and methods. The material included 113 patients(83 females and 30 males) with impacted upper or lowercanines from the Department of Orthodontics, MedicalUniversity in Warsaw. Patient’s dental records includingradiologic examination and study models were evaluated.Results. Anomalies associated with impacted canineswere observed in 46% of patients. In the maxilla, anomaliesin tooth shape and size were diagnosed the most frequently(46.5%), followed by the agenesis of lateral incisors (23.26%), whereas in the mandible canine transmigrationwas observed in 55.6% of cases. Observed anomalies wereassociated with: agenesis or anomalies in tooth shape of theupper lateral incisors (23.89%), agenesis of other teeth(18.58%), transposition of the upper canines with the upperlateral incisors (1.77%) or upper first premolars (1.77%)and transmigration of the lower canines (4.24%).Conclusions. Dental abnormalities are often associated withthe impaction of canines. Their diagnosis may help cliniciansin an early diagnosis of an abnormal eruption path of canines, which subsequently may prevent canine impaction(Abramczyk J, Kresa P, Czochrowska E, Pietrzak-BilińskaB, Zadurska M.
