Application of Sorbent materials in Oil Spill management: A review
Journal Title: Caspian Journal of Applied Sciences Research - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
Oil spills compel a serious problem on the environment which not only causes loss of energy sources, but also severely pollutes the sea water that imposes a serious intimidation to the ecological environment. Oil spill research and development has involved a large number of experiments to evaluate the effectiveness and the effects of sea water protection and cleanup techniques. One of the most important remedies in oil spill response is mechanical recovery by use of sorbent materials. This paper highlights the reviews on oil spill cleanup by using different sorbent materials such as natural organic sorbents, inorganic sorbents and synthetic sorbents. It also discusses their characteristics with special consideration on the oil sorption ca-pacity, Oil Sorption Rate and Absorbency, oil retention, Recovery of Sorbed Oil and Reusability of the sorbent. The review also contemplates development of sorbents that increase the sorption capacity. As a result organic product sorbents have great potential than the commercial synthetic sorbents due to its bio-degradable, eco-friendly and readily available.

Application of Complex Surfactant Based on Cottonseed Oil as CO[sub]2[/sub]-Corrosion Inhibitor and for Removing Thin Oil Slicks from Water Surface
The corrosion inhibition and adsorption behavior of sulfated fatty acid diethanolamine (SFADC) as complex surfactant on carbon steel in CO2-saturated 1% NaCl solutions was investigated using LPR corrosion rate. Inhibitor...
Reduction of Faecal Indicators and Elimination of Pathogens from Sewage Treated Effluents by Heat Treatment
Different pathogens may be found in the sewage treated effluents generated by sewage treatment plants (STPs). The United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) regulations have established pathogen reduc...
The Effect of Explicit and Implicit Vocabulary Instruction on Vocabulary Knowledge of University Students
It is true that vocabulary is central to a language and is of paramount importance to a language learner as Ellis (1994) claims that “the cornerstone of L2 is its vocabulary. Instruction is an important contributor...
The Effect of Towing Duration on the Catch per Unit of Swept Area (CPUA) from the Bottom Trawl Surveys in the Persian Gulf
This study was conducted to record best towing duration for bottom trawl surveys to stock assessment in the Persian Gulf. Shannon-Wiener, Margalef and evennes index were calculated for four towing duration (60, 90, 120 a...
Triangular Symmetric Decomposition Method for Solving Fully Fuzzy Linear System
In this paper we discuss the Triangular symmetric (TS) decomposition of the coefficient matrix of the 2 x 2 fully fuzzy linear systems whose coefficients are triangular fuzzy numbers. By this decomposition every non-sing...
