Artificial UV light influence on the colour of chemically modified and thermo - mechanically processed oak (Quercus robur L.) and locust wood (Robinia pseudoacacia L.)

Abstract

Artificial UV light influence on the colour of chemically modified and thermo - mechanically processed oak wood (Quercus robur L.) and locust wood (Robinia pseudoacacia L.). The oak and locust wood was treated with ammonia gas. After the chemical modification, the material under study was subject to thermo - mechanical processing. The influence of artificial UV light on the colour of wood was analysed. Wood colour parameters were specified with the use of the mathematical colour space model CIE L*a*b*. It was observed that before irradiation the lightness of oak wood chemically modified in ammonia was greater than the lightness of locust by 30%. Oak wood, both chemically modified and after thermo - mechanical processing, was less susceptible to changes in lightness caused by UV light than locust wood. Depending on the time of UV irradiation, the total change in colour of densified oak wood amounted to 0.8 - 1.9 of the total colour change of oak modified in ammonia. In turn, the total colour change of densified locust wood was 2.0 - 2.7 times smaller than the total colour change of locust wood modified in ammonia. Keywords:
