Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2014, Vol 30, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. A physiotherapist should be physically active to perform his/her profession appropriately. The aim of this study was to assess 7-day physical activity of physiotherapists with its basic determinants.Material and methods. This cross-sectional study involved 117 subjects, 91 (77.7%) fe males and 28 (22.3%) males, aged 38±10 years. „Stanford 7-Day Physical Activity Recall” standardized questionnaire was applied to assess the activities related to medical profession, houseork, recreation, sport and hours of sleep. Results. In the week under investigation, the subjects slept approximately 7.4±1.0 hours / day (median = 7.6. They spent 11.4±4.3 hours / day (median 11.4) ) on moderate physical activity,: 4.7±4.1 hours / day (median 4.3) on intense activity and: 0.5±1.3 hours / day (median 0.1) on a very intense activity. The number of hours spent on those types of activity did not differ between consecutive days. Women slept 0.5 hours longer per day than males (F: 7.5±1.0; M: 7.0±1.0; p=0.04). The physiotherapists who graduated from college school spent statistically significantly more time on moderate physical activity (about 2.5 hours) compared to those with other educational levels (p=0.04). Conclusions. Physiotherapists are moderately active and they spend only 5 hours daily for intense physical activity, mostly during working hours. In order to perform their profession appropriately, they ought to increase the level of current activity.
